An update for my subscribers

Bonjour tout le monde!

I will keep this short and to the point – Starting Feb 8th, this blog hosted on WordPress.com, will only be accessible via the link http://aditto.wordpress.com and no longer be accessible via http://blog.aditto.info. Let me put it once more – you will reach my blog only via http://aditto.wordpress.com.

It is too much for me to renew the domain subscription every year and also the WordPress domain mapping. Henceforth, I will simply let WordPress be where it is!

What does it mean for you? That depends on how you access/reach my blog:

1. If you are subscribed via WordPress.com
No change for you :) Lucky yougaiz!

2. If you are subscribed via Feedburner
No change for yougaiz either!

3. If you have subscribed via feed aggregators such as Google Reader:
Please check your feed URL, and if necessary change it to http://aditto.wordpress.com/feed/ (Thanks :))

4. If you visit my blog via Twitter or Facebook shares
Going forward you will continue to receive the updates with the correct URL. Most historic links will however not work.

5. If you reach my blog through a Google Search Query result
I am hoping Google Search automatically reverts all blog.aditto links to aditto.wordpress links, since the suffixes will remain the same.

6. If you have linked my blog on your blog, either in a blog post or blog rollI am afraid but you may just need to update the link to http://aditto.wordpress.com/ (Thanks :))

If you are not yet subscribed to my blog, check the subscription options on the top or in the sidebar on the right. Or just leave your email ID in a comment below.

I hope I don’t lose any regular readers/subscribers with this change. I also hope the number of hits/day don’t go down!

Merci beaucoup :)

Hello friend. How have you been? I saw you uploaded an awesome photograph of a lonely girl standing on a pristine beach with white sands and blue waters, with arms wide open! You look so pretty! Oh, and I saw your Twitter profile, wow those bangles in the background photo look amazing! Sad, we don’t see them much in the markets these days. Where did you get to buy them? And who took that picture?

You ‘liked’ that picture of the Phantom Sweet Cigarettes, doing rounds of ‘sharing’ on Facebook, didn’t you? Looks like you are an active member of this group called “Proud to be an Indian”. What fun it was smoking virtual rings of those sweet Phantom Cigarettes, scaring shit out of the elders. Cool yeah, long lost memories, good to have them refreshed.

Oh by the way, did you know that that image was actually created by me, from one of my photographs? Yeah, I searched high and low all over Pune to find those Phantoms. Eventually I had to mail the CEO of Harnik Sweets, Mr Gautam Harnik, asking him where I could find them. Here, you can read more about that story and also see the photograph on my original blog post. Go ahead, feel free.

Okay. Did you see that same photograph? Here it is again in case you felt too lazy to go and read the blog (I know you must be lazy, clicking “Like” and “Share” is easier than right-clicking on a link and reading it in another tab while you are at something else).

What I actually want you to see is that fine script at the bottom right end of the photo. You see that? It states that I hold the copyright for this image. Also, the disclaimer on my blog prohibits you from picking stuff without attributing it to me. Here is the link for that:
http://blog.aditto.info/disclaimer/

Essentially, you have violated my copyright by using my content, without attributing it to me. Worse, you even went one step ahead by cropping out the copyright line from the image. Well, you did not of course do it. Someone really smart must have done it, someone who knows how to use image editing tools too! You just promoted it further, you just shared it with an even larger audience. You just hit the “Like” and the “Share” buttons on Facebook. Simple for you, no? Not for me.

This is really trivial. It is a photograph that represents sweet memories of my childhood. But not just mine, it represents memories of millions of you, who are almost my age, who have lived during the times of the Phantom Sweet Cigarettes. I would be more than happy to share this with you, share the photo, share the stories, whatever you wish. I am happy to see that my photograph makes you happy.

Unfortunately, the story does not end there, I am pretty sure it won’t. This is not about sharing memories, this is about lifting content, without attribution or permission. I do not even get a link back to my blog, not even a ‘Thank You’ note. Some days later, the same FB group would have millions of followers/members and maybe even advertisers. The same FB group could use content uploaded on its page as its own for any kind of activity – marketing, political unrest movement, stalking people, anything – I am scared to even think of this. Content created by me or thousands of bloggers like me who use original content, gets shared across thousands of social media networks, groups and forums. Passing on links to the original content is acceptable, downloading and uploading as your own is not!

I also do a little bit of photography in my spare time. I make sure that I upload images with copyright information / watermarks only. However, I do not use tactics such as putting a huge watermark that covers 75% of the image. I think that really reduces the quality of my images and the appeal they carry. But I do expect you to respect the fact that I own the content I create – the photos I take and upload on my blog, the articles I write here, and anything I put on Facebook and Twitter. To think of it, Facebook and Twitter are turning out to be massive problems for people concerned about safety and copyrights. I never know when the photo I clicked of my beautiful friend will be downloaded from my photography page by a stupid girl only to upload it back as her own profile picture! People like you are shameless enough to put beautiful photographs as your cover photos on Facebook or background images on Twitter. Yes, websites like Pintrest scare me. It makes me wonder if the price of information and content on the internet is really zero!

A lot of bloggers are up in arms against this free lifting of content from our blogs. Read stuff that the Idea-Smithy has written on similar issues http://ideasmithy.wordpress.com/?s=copyright .

It is sad to know of such practices. Show some creativity guys, show some maturity. Show some decency to acknowledge the fact that you do not own the content you have uploaded. This does not go out only to you, but all the news reporters, and editors, and wannabe media people – You CANNOT lift images from someone’s blog or Facebook page to use it in a story or campaign of your own, without permission, or attribution and at times without paying a royalty.

Even as I publish this blog post, I am aware that there could be some content on my blog that is not created by me, for which I have failed to provide attribution. I am going through all my blog posts to check for those and make this blog a cleaner place.

Food experiments? – Mango Vanilla Milkshake

It takes a lot for most of us hostel-bred Maggi-eating class to move our asses and enter the kitchen for something productive! Being a self proclaimed food lover, I think was a bit easier for me, thankfully I always had a fully functional kitchen in my home – wherever I’ve stayed post graduation.

Marriage made it easier for me. It takes two to tango, doesn’t it? Well, one of the key motivations for cooking, is a person who would eat it with love. Today, my wife has officially designated me as the cook of all exotic recipes, while she would retain the title of official cook of everyday extremely nutritious food!

And oh, it helps to have some extremely good cooks in your friend circle!

So, of the many awesome things that I can make, and have made… let the simplest and my most favorite one go onboard my blog, first!

Mango Milkshake with a tinge of Vanilla
Blend a few ripe mangoes in a blender, with sugar to taste. Here I’d rather NOT use Alphonsos, though I know they are one of the most popular and most expensive ones in the market. This year I tried the maximum varieties of Indian mangoes, and can safely conclude that the Baneshan/Baiganpalli are my favorite kind – they are heavy, nice, firm, full of flesh and fibreless (okay, I did not mean to make it sound like this, but hell yeah)!

To about 250ml of the blended mangoes, add 100-200ml chilled water (depends on how thick you want your milkshake) and 200ml chilled milk. Let a little cream from the milk flow into the blender – too bad if you have toned milk.
Again, add some sugar to taste – safe to use castor sugar, since sugar does not dissolve very well in cold liquids.

Add in a few drops of vanilla extract to this and blend well! Voila, you have about 2 tall servings of awesome Mango Milkshake with a tinge of Vanilla ;)

Note: this recipe is NOT for the calorie conscious and certainly NOT for you if you are desperately trying to lose some of your adipose tissues!

Thanks Suchitra for pushing me to blog about my exploits in the kitchen. I am the kind of person who would first order a dessert, and then the main course, hence I thought this would be the perfect recipe to start off with. Whatsay?

PS: Sorry, I forgot to take a picture today, but if I repeat the recipe again, I will surely keep you guys updated :)

Things to do?

Well well, I have been going around telling everyone that I need 8 days a week! And that is pretty much true. So let me explain.

Basically, I need a 3 days weekend for myself. That is to do all the wonderful things that I really want to do on a weekend. One full day, goes towards sleeping and taking care of household chores such as cleaning, dusting, washing clothes, blah blah blah. The second day, is to go out! Go out watch a play or attend a concert, or maybe just go shopping with wify hopping across shopping centers, meeting friends or going on a photowalk. Or multiple of those things together. The 3rd day of the weekend should be for myself! What do I do on that day? Do things I enjoy doing at home! For example, writing a blog! Or editing my photos, or maybe even cooking an amazing meal for that matter!

So those are the 3 days I would ideally love to spend after a hectic week, on my way to a recharged new week at work! Now people ask, why not just have the usual 7 days week, with 4 working days and 3 days for your weekend? Well, I personally believe 5 days is just the right size of a working week.  4 days is short, 3 even shorter. Here is why – You come back to work on a Monday, still feeling blue, lost and lethargic. Tuesday is when you are on top of what you need to do and really start working on it. You are at your best on Wednesday and Thursday – the two days you really work with full steam. Thursday is the night for you to go out have a drink or watch a movie, or come back and spend some time with family again. On Friday, the weekend is almost there and you are almost too excited to focus! Now if you take away Friday for the weekend, Thursdays would not be as efficient as they are, and similar for Monday! Whatever.

So make that 5 working days and 3 days for the weekend. That would make an year with 45 nice full weeks, and 5 days to spare for your annual vacation :) But of course, you would get only 45 Saturdays and 45 Sundays and 45 8th days !! Don’t you just love this model?

Anyhoo… so coming back to the blog, I still have the following stuff to upload on my blog:
1. Prague Travelog and Pictures
2. Milan Travelog and Pictures
3. Salzburg Travelog and Pictures

Plus, in addition to all of those, need to write two travelogues for ShutterMonks – yes and they need new words, and maybe I need to select and attach different pics too!

And? Yes, edit some more pics and upload them!

I’ve not even given my music another chance after the initial few bouts last year! SAD!

But yes, if you do like the 8 days a week idea, let us sit together for a few shots of JD+Coke!
